Futons are the staple of those looking to furnish their sleeping space on a tight budget. The classic, minimalist design fits almost any kind of décor and can be dressed up in any way you can imagine.
Many futons convert to a seating option making them ideal for tight living spaces or spare bedrooms.
The downside of futons? Well, they’re not very comfortable, at least not compared to a luxury mattress. They’re fine for a night or two, but prolonged everyday use can lead to backache and a lousy night’s sleep.
So, how do you go about making your futon a place you want to go to sleep without breaking the bank or your back? Fortunately, there is a multitude of options that will give you the sweet dreams you’ve always well… dreamed of. Even better, they’re budget-friendly.
1. Change the Mattress
Ok, so this isn’t necessarily the cheapest option, but it’s the easiest. Simply changing up the mattress will give your futon a new lease of life. Cheap futons come with cheap mattresses. That means they’re thin and don’t hold their shape well. You can purchase futon mattresses in different thicknesses, so a thicker, better-quality mattress may be all you need.
Furthermore, you don’t necessarily have to purchase a mattress specifically for a futon. If you don’t plan to fold it into a seating position, you can simply buy a mattress for a bed. This is often cheaper than buying a specialist item.
2. Add a Mattress Topper
A lower-cost solution to replacing the entire mattress is to add a topper to the existing mattress. Toppers are available in different materials, but the best value is memory foam. It’s a great way to get the comfort of a memory foam bed without having to shell out for an entire memory foam mattress.
All you have to do is layer it on top of your futon mattress, add the top sheet, then lay down and enjoy the new feeling of a comfortable bed!
3. Lay Down Extra Comforters
This is the ultimate budget option as most people have an extra comforter or two around the house. This method is beneficial if your futon mattress is a bit lumpy. Adding comforters will make the futon feel much softer and smoother.
Another advantage of using comforters is that you can adjust the number of layers until you find a thickness that is just right for you. Experiment by laying down folded or flat comforters until you’ve found what works for you. Then, add a top sheet to secure everything into place, and you’re good to go.
4. Try Adding Extra Bed Slats
Sometimes, it’s not the futon mattress that’s the problem; it’s the futon frame itself causing the discomfort. Manufacturers lower the cost of the futon by scrimping on the bed slats. Unfortunately, this can cause the mattress to sag between the slats and create a rigid, bumpy surface that’s uncomfortable for sleeping.
Adding a few bed slats in-between the existing ones is a fantastic solution to leveling out the bed and creating a flat, smooth sleeping surface. Once you’ve added the additional slats, lay your mattress over them, and you’ll find it will be much better supported.
5. Add an Air Mattress
This probably isn’t a good permanent solution for making your futon more comfortable but will be acceptable for guests staying one or two nights. By adding an air mattress on top of the futon, you’re adding height to a notoriously low style of bed as well as a thick, comfy layer to sleep on. You can even add the futon mattress on top of the air bed if it isn’t too thick.
6. Layer a Featherbed on Top
A featherbed is a mattress topper; however, instead of using foam, it’s filled with feathers. It looks a bit like a down comforter, but the difference is that you sleep on top of it. This option is a good choice for those who sleep on their sides as the down offers extra support.
This option is, however, more expensive than a foam topper, and you must be cautious using it around people who suffer from feather allergies.
7. Replace Your Futon
As a last resort, you may want to consider replacing your futon, especially if it is old and falling apart. Having a new comfortable bed is far preferable to suffering ongoing discomfort caused by a bad futon. Even though this is a costly option, it’s the best one for your health.
