The Acer Aspire V15 Nitro is a great laptop. It comes up as a lot of the best budget gaming laptop like from Wirecutter and others. I've found it is a great laptop for everything and not just gaming. The red blacklight keyboard as I've found is less intense than a white backlight keyboard but no less bright.

The SSD makes for a speedier bootup and as we know eventually everything will be SSD. I pretty much agree with the reviews from the news outlets about the few flaws such as all the USB ports on the right side.

4K is great for doing creative work in Photoshop. You just need to wait a few hours while it installs Windows 10 and everything but you'll have that with any laptop.

I've been using the V15 Nitro for about a month and a half as I write this review. I'd have given it five stars but for two realtively small issues. First, I am not a fan of manufacturer-installed software (e.g., bloatware) -- in fairness to Acer, it was not particularly burdensome to remove what I didn't want on the system. Second, most of the ports are on the right side of the system, meaning anything plugged in with a cable can potentially interfere with right-handed use of a mouse -- in fairness to Acer, the power cord is designed to avoid this issue, and in practice, other cords have not been much of an issue for me.

In all other respects, the system shines, particularly the 4K screen (resolution 3840 x 2160). I am at that age where eyesight is not as sharp as it once was. Running at this resolution, I was concerned print size would be too small to read. In fact, print size is addjustable, and even left at a relatively small size, is sharp and clear. Only rarely do I have to pick up reading glasses, and that is not the fault of the screen, but rather, of modern UI designers' love affair with flat, low contrast color schemes. (Older users of iPhones and iPads know exactly what I'm talking about...). The point is, the screen is absolutely wonderful.

Everything else "just works", and that is one of the highest compliments I can pay Acer in review of this system. The system boots quickly, and runs quietly. I'm not much of a gamer, so can't say much about what a modern game would do to the system, but an old copy of UT2004 triggers the cooling fans at a barely audible level. The keyboard is comfortable. The touchpad is nice, and can be disabled with a simple key combination if an external mouse is to be used instead. Sound quality is decent (actually pretty good for a laptop).

Bottom line: I have no regrets with this purchase. I am a systems engineer with a telecommunications company, and purchased this system to run VMs in a portable environment. This system is exactly what I was looking for -- highend capability for a very reasonable price.

We bought this laptop less than a year ago and it spontaneously stopped working completely. It won't even boot up. This was a very expensive machine and for it to stop working completely is a huge disappointment. We had originally been pleased with this machine and bought 4 additional acer laptops, and now it's fair to question whether that was a good decision. We'll definitely be taking pause before ordering another Acer laptop. The company would not accept or entertain any return, refund, or service for this. For a less than a year purchase of a machine that's gone completely dead, that seems pretty unreasonable.

Don't expect to be able to play games in 4k for the most part. I saw one other review claiming to have played arma 3 or csgo on high settings of slightly less than 4k and it ran perfectly which is a complete and utter lie. It struggles to reach 30 to 40 fps on low to mid settings in arma 3 with frequent drops and slightly higher frames in csgo but still frame drops in high activity at 4k. It also has a bug where the screen occasionally freezes for a few seconds and restarts itself which will crash games like arma 3. For the gaming aspect, expect to play most if not all games at 1080p high level graphics for 50 to 60 frames. The 4k screen looks beautiful and backlit keyboard great as well. The only thing I can say is that if you want this laptop mainly for gaming purposes, get something that either allocates more of the cost to the graphics card or just get something less expensive. For example the new Dell inspiron has the same graphics card gtx 960m but for $800. Had I researched the market more before getting this, I would have gotten something different. This laptop is undoubtedly a decent laptop, but not at all for the price.

This started out as a rocky purchase. I was going to return it because it stopped working (no display) after 6 days. I called Acer support and my experience with them made me angry and I decided to return it at that moment. Then I thought about how it had stopped working before I could back everything up, and that made me cool down enough to send it in for repair. If it came back wiped I would send it back to Amazon. It took about a week, and it came back intact and working superbly. It works much better than it did when I got it. It was the mainboard that was faulty. The replaced it. They sent (within the packing ) a sheet with the service information and what was done to the laptop. As of today, I am glad I decided to keep it. It is a very good machine.

Update: After using the laptop for almost three months, I have decided to upgrade my review to 5 stars! This machine is ahhmahhzing!

Absolutely love the 4K screen. Not in use for games, only "serious" work. Nice to have ample working memory and disk space. On the downside: it took some time to uninstall the adware collection that comes with it. No biggie, though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good computer, blurry text
Reviewed in Canada on November 9, 2015
I haven't really had too many issues with this computer. It's great. One issue I ran into was after I upgraded to Win 10. I couldn't log on to some websites. I had to upgrade the driver for the wireless Internet. That worked like a charm.

The one issue I have is the text looks quite washed out. It looks as if it's being seen through a filter. Maybe that's the trade-off between a great gaming laptop: great graphics but not good text. That's unfortunate, since I also use this computer for typing for work and homework.

    Overall, great computer.
