I personally like the 5G best as the signal covers my house ...

I personally like the 5G best as the signal covers my house ...
This is going to be more of a technical review.. I'm an IT Director for my company so I deal with this type of equipment all the time. I picked up this device for my house and I was looking for a few features. I wanted Gigabit ports, fast WiFi, and not a massive device. I also didn't want to spend a lot of money. So I landed on this device. I tested the Gigabit ports and 1 port wasn't Gigabit. Port 2 only worked at 100. Ports 1, 3, and 4 are Gigabit ports and had a transfer rate of about 933 MBits/sec (Same as Cisco 3750G switch) Port 2 was doing about 95 MBits/sec I tested the WiFi next. I disabled the 2.5G for a few reason. 1. I don't need it and 2 for Security. I setup the device using WPA2 using the 5G only. I personally like the 5G best as the signal covers my house well and it's the fastest.. The fastest speed I got was 295 MBits/Sec I would normally see about 200-250 MBits/Sec At 50 feet I was seeing about 110 MBits/Sec (Many walls away) I have no had any issues with this device. I stream all my TV services over the internet and this device steams them smoothly. The setup was pretty simple and some of the features are nice. I gave this device 4 stars because one of the parts didn't work at the Gigabit speeds. I'm not sure if this was just an issue on my device or if all devices have this problem. I'm not going to waste my time sending it back for this small issue. I attached a few pictures. Picture 1 is the fastest WiFi I saw on the device Picture 2 is the Gigabit port test
    Thank you for your feedback

      ONE WEEK UPDATE:

5G wireless signal is a little bit too weak on my iPhone 6S from the far end of the house. Switched to 2.4G and it’s fine. 5G still works great on my laptop and other devices with larger antennas.

Router won’t connect to Private Internet Access on OpenVPN but works fine with L2TP VPN. I suspect this is an issue with PIA rather than the router itself. Router is auto-reconnecting to the L2TP VPN after each ISP outage so that’s a good sign. I have yet to test for IP leakage during the transition when my ISP comes back online. However I can say for sure that the VPN is passing IP and DNS leak tests while it is connected. You will have to go to the router’s WAN settings and enter your VPN provider’s static DNS addresses in order to prevent DNS leaks. Overall, I’m satisfied with the router’s VPN capabilities and VERY happy with the consistent auto-reconnect keeping the VPN always on.

      Original Review:

Been online for a few minutes and ran a speed test pulling a 2GB file from my network share.

Wireless speeds at 60Mb/s from about 35ft away through multiple walls.

Standing about 10ft away through 1 wall I was getting around 100-160Mb/s.

Standing right in front of the router I got 300Mb/s.

Test was conducted with a mid-2010 MacBook Pro on the 5G wireless only. It may be worth noting that this MacBook’s maximum wireless speed is 300Mbps. All other devices in the house were on the 2.4G network at the time, so this does not account for everything, but it’s a solid demonstration of the router’s capability for 300Mbps of actual throughput in optimal conditions.

Overall, an excellent wireless performance so far. As many other reviewers have stated, the bottom line here is that I’m getting viable whole-house coverage from this single device.

As for the web UI, it’s user friendly enough for anyone who has configured a router before. The only irritating feature is that any changes you want to make have to be applied immediately, and each change requires a reboot. This is fairly common practice for SOHO router web UIs, and for good reason, so ASUS loses a star on UI but not on the overall rating.

I haven’t tried to use it yet, but the router’s VPN setting offers PPTP, L2TP, and OpenVPN options. I will update this review after testing the OpenVPN and seeing how it handles ISP outages which are a daily occurrence here.

I recently moved to a larger apartment, and with my move I decided to upgrade my internet speed. I splurged on the "up to 300 mbps" plan offered by my local internet provider, but was getting closer to about 35 mbps at the highest with my old apple airport extreme router. From my room located a floor above the router (located where it sees the most use), I got very low signal strength. So I decided to do some research on routers and learned that I would need a dual band router to get the sort of performance that I was already paying for. After doing some reading regarding the higher end routers and realizing that I don't need all the bells and whistles, I narrowed down to this one. Amazon's free 1 day shipping on this product left me a VERY happy customer, I ordered it Tuesday evening and it showed up at my door at 9 the next morning. The router was very easy to set up, it took me more time to get my old airport unplugged and rearrange the way I had my wiring organized than it took to get this one set up. Once I had it plugged in, it took me maybe 5 minutes to set up, including changing the network name(s) and password on the Asus website. Upon testing in my room that used to receive poor signal from my old router, the signal strength is much stronger and much faster than before. I'm sure I can fiddle some more with the antennae some more to optimize it, as well. For someone who has fairly modest needs such as myself, this router is excellent; especially at this price point. Even my technology challenged mother could manage this, I am sure! If anything changes my opinion about this product, I will be sure to update my review to reflect it.

I received this today and got it set up as an access point for my Centurylink Technicolor C2100T bonded DSL modem/router combination. TheC2100Tseems to handle router functions pretty well and it provides decent dual wireless to a good part of our house. We had a weaker signal in part of the house including unusable 5ghz in the MBR. I tried wireless to wireless extender and got very little improvement, we decided to go with an access point. It seemed that it was easier to find a router with good wireless compared to dedicated AP units,
The Asus more than doubled our speeds in the weak areas and the software seems pretty easy to use.
The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that all of the quick start documentation is geared toward setting up the Asus for router operating mode.
I will go through how I set it up for AP after a call to Asus support.

      1. Go to Asus support and download/install the Device Discovery software on the computer that you will use to set up the Asus.
      2. Ignore all of the instructions to do anything to your existing router or modem/router.
      3. Connect a cat5 cable from the Asus WAN port to your setup PC directly. No other cables connected to the Asus.
      4. Connect the power cable to the Asus and use button on back to power up.
      5. On PC browser, go to 192.168.1.1 and you will get to login page, so enter admin for both. You may get a chance to change these at this time.
      6. You will go to main page and the software will expect you to go through the router setup sequence – don’t.
      7. In the advanced settings panel, click on administration. Click the tab along the top for Operating Mode. Click Access Point Mode and click Apply.
      8. After processing, you will get a screen to set wireless SSIDs, security and such. You can do this now or later. I chose to do it later and hit Apply.
      9. The next screen is to set up the IP address, etc. I just left it all on auto and hit Apply. It will reset the Asus IP to 192.168.50.1
      10. After processing, it tells you that you are set up.
      11. Unplug the cat5 cable from both the PC and Asus. Plug a wired network cable into the WAN port on the Asus. This will result in your existing router assigning a new IP address to the Asus.
      12. Run the Device Discovery software to get the new IP address.
      13. Enter the new IP address in your browser and you should get back to the Asus software.

Update 11/28/2017: Upgraded to five stars due to rock solid performance and fantastic wireless coverage.I have now turned off the wireless on my modem/router completely and this covers the whole house - often with wireless speeds identical to wired.
