Installation on 2010 Nissan Frontier

Installation on 2010 Nissan Frontier
Okay so first thing's first. Its a very good product and in many situations there are probably no problems, but there are some issues when installing on my platform. First as a general statement, the red T-taps provided arent great. They tend to back off with vibrations, if you pinch down too hard you can cut the reverse wire in half when trying to make the connection, and they arent weatherproof. So if you dont have an internal reverse light housing or have no weatherstripping around the housing its something to be aware of. If you can buy some Posi-taps and use those instead, theyre pretty cheap and a much better alternative. Secondly for the Frontier and possibly other pickups, the hole cut-out on the metal bracket used to put liscense plate screw through in order to mount the camera is in a bad location. Even at its lowest position the top of the camera still interfered with the opened tailgate. I thought i had it mounted low enough but a few days later i opened the tailgate and the plastic hole on the back of the camera broke off (As shown in pic). I had the cut the bracket hole longer using a dremel so i could mount it low enough so it wouldnt interfere. And now the camera is flipped upside down using the other hole to mount it. Meaning i had to flip the screen around so the picture isnt upside down, but now the guidelines are upside down too and theres no way to flip them so i had to turn them off. TLDR: If the taps were posi-taps, the metal bracket had a longer liscense plate screw hole to allow for a lower mounting position, and the back of the camera where the two positional holes are was metal instead of plastic this would be a perfect product

I installed this Boscam backup camera a year and a few months ago. This review will only cover reliability and customer satisfaction; I humbly suggest that this info will be more useful to you than yet another evaluation of features, usability, etc.

My car is garaged most of the time and the camera is used several days a week. It's been in a few heavy rain storms but nothing severe or involving snow/ice. It has performed flawlessly since it was installed. The monitor has only lost contact with the camera when the battery ran out (I don't use the solar charger). Each time I recharged the battery I had to re-pair the monitor with the camera, but the process is pretty easy and fast. I haven't measured how long the battery lasts but my sense is at least 3 months per charge, and the battery life hasn't gone down. The video quality has stayed the same, which IMO is good and completely fine for its purpose, even if it's not as sharp as the video from pre-installed backup cameras. I am 100% satisfied with the reliability of this camera/monitor over an extended period of time.

Got one of these for my parents' 2003 Honda Element which has really awkward sight lines. Worked great - easy install if you're somewhat handy, surprisingly good low-light performance, no issues with the wireless connection. Got a 2010 Camry for my daughter recently, and buying another of these backup cameras was the first thing I did. Think about whether you want to tie the camera to the reverse light, or to the license plate bulbs. We always drive with our lights on and having the camera available when you're driving forward (into the garage or pulling through a parking spot) is nice, so I used the license plate bulb both times. That was really a necessity in the Element (the reverse lights were a long way away - didn't want to mess with all that wiring) but was a flip of the coin for the Camry since the reverse lights are in the trunk lid.

The optional red/green/yellow lines on the video are a great feature with lots of choices to fit your setup and the monitor remembers which one you set it to. Display is really fast; no waiting around for it to boot or warm up or connect to the camera.

Anyway, anytime I hear a friend lamenting the lack of a backup camera in their vehicle, I tell them to get this - at this price there's no excuse not to.

PICTURE QUALITY: Decent daytime picture quality, very good nighttime picture quality, but update rates provide a bit of "stutter" to the picture; still quite usable, but mildly irritating. This is the primary basis for other than a 5-star rating for picture quality

INSTALLATION: Certainly easier than 100% wired solutions that require routing of wires from the camera to the display unit, so that part of the installation is a breeze with this unit. You still need to route the camera's wiring from its mounting point (generally above the license plate) to your brake light's power lead and ground (or a constant DC source if you want the camera on all the time -- but why would you?). Installation on my wife's Mazda wasn't too difficult, but you do have to go online to figure out which wires are which and how to remove/reinstall a few factory pieces (like the trunk lid insulation, the access panel to the tail lights, etc.

Once installed, just keep it plugged in to your cigar/accessory socket and it's ready to go (or pull plug to save battery if socket power is not controlled by your car's ignition system). An indicator light on the monitor glows to show that power is applied, and the camera activates when the car is shifted into reverse.

A very nice addition to any car without a factory-installed backup camera. The only thing missing is a motion sensor to alert you when you might hit something ;o)

I drive a 2005 model car that I still love, but after seeing my husband's 2015 model with a backup camera, I looked for an aftermarket camera for my ride. This little camera does a great job. The picture is clear and crisp, and honestly better quality than expected. Of course the quality diminishes slightly at night as most any camera does. Still it is helpful and functional. I had my mechanic install it for me since the car was due for service at the time the camera came. Mechanic said installation was a breeze. My only frustration with the camera is the mounting of it inside the car. The suction mount works well as long the car sits in the garage. But once out and about, the temperature of the dash heats up in the sun, and the suction will not hold. I've been reading others' reviews and may try mounting it on the glass of the windshield or using velcro to mount it. That's disappointing. But since the camera works so well, it is a small annoyance to deal with in order to have the advantage of seeing what's behind me. I recommend this unit to anyone wanting an aftermarket backup camera for an older model car.

Overall it is a pretty good camera and clear enough. I was able to install by myself on the Transporter T5, using a coat hanger to get it through the cable section on the rear door.

The only issue I had was that the camera at time requires a restart to kick in after its been running for a while. Not sure of the reason for this.
