- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2019Model: Cable RouterVerified PurchaseI replaced a Comcast unit which was larger. I wanted to avoid the monthly charge for the hardware and own my own unit. After much research I settled on the Orbi based on my neighbor's positive experience after I recommended it to them and the positive reviews on Youtube and Amazon. I've read the negative review about Netgear customer service and hope that I don't have to deal with that. So far so good.
The installation was fairly straight forward although they don't specifically say that you will really do better connecting directly to the modem with a laptop of pc. I suppose the phone app would have worked if Comcast hadn't been down and couldn't activate a modem. I only learned this after calling Comcast tech support. That's when I switched to connecting directly to the device with a PC. I know my way around the settings so that was no problem.
The only other problem I had was resetting many of my devices to the new router even though I gave it the same name and password. Some devices were happy others were grumpy. Overall it was a satisfactory experience.
The signal strength is good. Even the neighbor said the signal was as good as theirs.
If any problems develop I will certainly update the review. Based on my experience so far I'd definitely recommend getting it. I specifically like the way each device connects to the speed that is best for it with the single name and password. Streaming Hulu, Amazon Fire Stick and Roku are all flawless at a max speed of 150. That's way under the capability of this device but I'm looking towards the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2019Model: Cable RouterVerified PurchaseMy only complaint about the Orbi combo router/modem is the price. But that’s becajse I’m cheap not because it’s not worth the money. So far, it’s been operating at optimum speeds and comes with two 5 and one 2.4 signals We use one of the 5ghz signals strictly for guest devices, and the other two for our home. The only device we have bothered to wire into the Orbi over Ethernet is our PS4, other than that we can have a full gaming rig, a MacBook Pro, a HomePod, and multiple portable devices like phones connected and operating all at once with no perceptible decrease in overall download speeds. Lastly, the administrative interface is easy to set up for inexperienced users, but provides enough management flexibility for those who want a more customized network setup, such as MAC address filtering, custom firewall rules, and limiting signal broadcast. Overall it’s not just a good home networking product, it’s also light years ahead in router aesthetics. Unlike other netgear routers of similar specs, it’s not hideous to display and will blend nicely on a book shelf or media console.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2019Model: Cable RouterVerified PurchaseFor the first year I loved my Orbi All-in-One Modem/Router Combo. It provided excellent speeds and was easy to set up via the app. Then the trouble started at 22 months. I noticed nothing was connecting to the 5Ghz network. Of course at this point Netgear does not provide any support for the device, and the warranty is expired. I called and they took me through troubleshooting to the point where they felt it was not a hardware issue (I’m not convinced). I was then offered the option to buy phone support for a year at a price that was pretty near what I paid for the unit to begin with. I declined and read forums and factory reset the unit and generally sweated it for about a week. Essentially, it seems my Orbi was no longer able to produce a 5Ghz network, severely limiting its speed and usefulness.
What I learned is many people have the same experiences I did. The Orbi products work great till they don’t, which is often at about the two year mark. Some still buy these but get extended warranties from the retailers, so when they fail they can get replacements. This is too much for me.
Netgear seems to be big on selling Bitdefender subscriptions and extended support agreements with these units, but the units themselves are not very durable. I just need something I can count on, and not have to try to troubleshoot myself. Therefore, I guess this unit is destined for the landfill, and I’ll go rent what my ISP provides and supports as it is no doubt cheaper in the long run than buying an expensive Orbi and paying for subscriptions to keep it running.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2020Model: Cable RouterVerified PurchaseI bought the Orbi to replace a modem no longer supported by my ISP and an Apple AirPort Extreme. The setup was extremely easy via the app I downloaded to my phone: easy to follow steps, no need to call the ISP, only took about 10 minutes. So far my internet speed has doubled and there have been no stability problems at all. My house is about 1500 sq. ft. and I get a strong signal throughout, even in the front and back yards. I like having the app on my phone to see what devices are connected to my network and to make any changes I want without having to go through a clunky browser interface. I was a little wary of having 2 devices in 1, but I’ve already come around to the plus of fewer cords and more shelf space. I’d recommend the Orbi as an elegant solution to keeping up with hardware upgrades for good internet performance.
